Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto was elected as TNI Commander to replace General Gatot Nurmantyo who retired. Before being appointed as KSAU, Hadi had served as Inspector General of the Ministry of Defense until 2017. Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto was elected Commander of the TNI by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) because he was considered capable and capable in leading the institution of TNI.
